The Reaper's Pace - How to Walk for Your Life!

Outrunning death is something that we all want to do. Regardless of age, everyone is concerned about some aspect of their health as it pertains to aging. Nowadays people are looking for bio-hacks that can skyrocket their health and increase the likelihood that they will be able to play with their grandkids or live an active and fun life as they age.

Well, what if there was a way for you to make a large impact on your longevity and health without having to spend a fortune on training or gym equipment? Not to mention, outside of being a fountain of youth, it can promote positive mental health and be a social outing all rolled into one. A group of researchers in Sydney, Australia conducted a study on a group of over 1,700 older men for a span of five years. During the study, the researchers tracked the men’s walking speeds at regular intervals to find possible connections between pace and markers of health. Over the five year period a total of 266 men passed away. The interesting thing found during this study was a recurring speed that was achieved by the individuals in the groups that survived the study. All of the men that survived during the testing period clocked a walking speed averaging over 3 miles per hour.

As a result of the study, the researches concluded that slow walking speed is most likely a relevant health marker for predicting health levels. What this also means is that we now have a pretty concrete idea of what is a good goal to shoot for when we are looking to improve our physical health. In the age where running and jogging have permeated a large part of society, it may be the humble act of walking that is a ticket to a long, healthy life.
